On December 9, 2019 the ZOU organized the 30th edition of the Jerusalem Prize, which this year was given to the archbishop of Montevideo, cardinal Daniel Sturla.

Special mentions were given to Prof. Eduardo Tornaría, former director of Escuela Integral, Dr. Eduardo Kohn, executive director for Latin America of Bnai Brith and Prof. Charlotte de Grünberg, director general of Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The Jerusalem Prize is awarded each year to outstanding persons of Uruguay, who support the cause of Jewish people. It recognizes those people who have striven for the full validity of human rights and the peaceful coexistence between peoples.

Upon receiving the special mention, Prof. Charlotte de Grünberg spoke about the central role that education has always played in the Jewish community.

In particular, she referred to the foundation of ORT in 1880 in St. Petersburg in Tsarist Russia, with the aim of rescuing Jewish populations through education for work.
